La Fortuna Without a Car: How to Get Around and Back

Aerial view of central La Fortuna showing the town park, church, surrounding shops, and a line of taxis along the main road

Yes, you can visit La Fortuna without a car. Walking works for the town center, while Uber, taxis and prearranged transfers can take you to attractions outside it. Choose accommodation with meals in mind, compare transport options before buying tickets and organize the return from outings farther from town.

For a first visit, I would plan one main activity each day. A morning at the hanging bridges or an afternoon at the waterfall is easier to enjoy when you have time for lunch and a break afterward.

If you are still arranging the journey here, our guide to getting from SJO to La Fortuna covers airport transfers separately.

Where to stay without a car

Think about the parts of the day between tours: breakfast, dinner, a grocery stop or an afternoon when you want to do very little. If each requires a ride, accommodation outside town can add more transportation than you expected.

A quieter location may still be worth it. Compare the complete stay rather than room prices alone, and ask whether there is a comfortable walking route to somewhere to eat.

For tour pickups, send the operator your accommodation's map pin. A vacation rental described as being “in La Fortuna” may not appear on a hotel pickup list or fall within the advertised coverage.

Our guide to how many nights to stay in La Fortuna can help you decide how much to fit into the trip.

Uber, taxis and transfers: which should you use?

Uber when your timing is flexible

Uber lists service in La Fortuna, while noting that pickups may take longer than in larger cities. Check the app for the options and price estimate available for your journey.

I would consider it when your timing is flexible. For a timed reservation or a return from a more distant attraction, a confirmed transfer can remove some uncertainty. Before relying on an app for the return, check how you will get online and have another contact available if no ride is offered.

A prearranged taxi for a specific journey

A taxi booked in advance is useful when you want a particular pickup time or plan to travel between attractions.

Describe the full route when requesting a quote. Town to the waterfall and back is different from continuing to the hot springs and returning after dinner. Ask whether the total includes waiting or extra stops.

Park transportation or a tour package

A park transfer takes you to a particular attraction; a guided package may also include admission and a guide. Compare those options before buying tickets separately.

When reserving, settle these details together:

  • The exact pickup point and departure time.
  • The return time and drop-off location.
  • The total for your group, including taxes and any minimum passenger requirement.
  • A contact number and what happens if your plans change.

An airport shuttle gets you to La Fortuna. It does not automatically provide transportation during your stay.

Getting to the main attractions

La Fortuna Waterfall

The waterfall’s official directions state that no public bus reaches the reserve facilities. The official site lists an approximate taxi fare of US$10 from downtown; confirm the current fare before booking.

I would take a ride to the entrance and save my energy for the visit. The official site describes approximately 530 steps down, followed by the climb back up. Consider that before adding a walk from town to save on transportation.

Our La Fortuna Waterfall guide covers the viewpoint, descent and climb.

Mistico Hanging Bridges

Mistico offers transportation to downtown La Fortuna and nearby hotels. Send the park your accommodation’s location and ask which admission times work with its transport service.

Its transport guide explains that public buses do not go directly to the entrance. For a first visit with a timed booking, I would choose a confirmed transfer over an indirect bus journey.

If you are deciding between parks, our Mistico vs. Sky Adventures comparison covers the walking experience. Check transport arrangements with the park you select.

Volcano trails

Use the exact attraction name and map pin when booking a driver. If your plan is Arenal 1968, say that rather than simply asking to go to “Arenal Volcano.”

Ask the attraction how much time to allow for your chosen walk before setting the pickup. If you want to continue somewhere else afterward, include that stop in the original ride request.

Hot springs and night walks

Arrange your hot-springs ride around the reservation you actually book, including any meal. Our hot springs guide compares several options.

For a night walk, transport can be part of the booking choice. Ecocentro Danaus lists it as an additional service. Arenal Oasis publishes separate Frog Watching rates for arriving independently and with hotel transportation.

Check pickup coverage and the return when comparing the final totals. Our night-tour guide explains the differences between the walks.

Can you use public buses for sightseeing?

Check each destination individually. A route passing through the wider Arenal area may still leave you with a separate journey to the entrance.

Before relying on a bus, establish where to get off, how to complete the final stretch and when you can return. The waterfall and Mistico examples above show why an intercity bus connection does not necessarily solve local sightseeing. If you cannot establish a workable route, arrange another ride for that outing.

Is visiting without a car cheaper?

It depends on your accommodation, group size and plans. Compare the full transportation cost rather than only the airport shuttle or daily rental rate.

Arenal Oasis provides one useful example. Its Frog Watching page currently lists US$56 per adult arriving independently and US$67 with hotel transportation. The advertised difference is US$11 per person, or US$22 for two adults. Confirm the final total, taxes and accommodation coverage directly.

Compare that supplement with a quote for separate rides.

Add your transfers to and from La Fortuna, local activity rides and trips for meals or groceries. Compare the result with a rental quote showing the insurance and fees you would actually pay, plus fuel and parking. Keep admission and guiding equivalent on both sides.

Do you need a rental car in La Fortuna?

I would consider one if you want several independent stops each day, spontaneous changes of plan or frequent trips from accommodation outside town.

Going without one makes sense if you prefer a few planned outings, can organize their transportation and have somewhere convenient to eat. Once those arrangements are clear, you can spend more of the trip enjoying the forest, waterfall and hot springs instead of deciding how to reach the next stop.

Transport information and published price examples were checked against official operator sources on October 20, 2026. Prices, pickup coverage and schedules can change; confirm your arrangements directly before booking.
