Mistico vs. Sky Adventures: Which Hanging Bridges Should You Choose in La Fortuna?
Spend a little time planning a trip to La Fortuna and hanging bridges will probably end up on your list.
Then comes the harder question: Mistico or Sky Adventures?
At first, they can look like two versions of the same experience. Both take you through the rainforest around Arenal. Both have suspension bridges above the forest. And at both, you can choose to walk on your own or go with a guide.
But they do not make for exactly the same morning.
Mistico is the first place I would look if the hanging bridges are the main activity, you prefer a somewhat shorter and more developed trail, or you want to start early and leave plenty of room in the rest of the day.
Sky Adventures makes more sense if you want a slightly longer walk with more elevation changes, the height of the bridges is part of the fun, or you already plan to do the aerial tram or ziplines.
Neither park is automatically better.
Before comparing prices or counting bridges, ask a simpler question: what kind of morning do you actually want?

Mistico: when the bridges are the main event
If you picture an easygoing morning walking through the rainforest and crossing a series of hanging bridges along the way, Mistico is probably the first place to consider.
Its main trail is 3.2 kilometers, or about 2 miles, and includes 16 bridges in total, six of them hanging bridges.
Most visitors take around 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the route, although you can easily spend longer if you stop for photos, look for wildlife or simply take your time.
There is also a shorter route of about 1.5 kilometers.
That manageable length is part of Mistico's appeal.
It gives you a substantial rainforest experience without automatically taking over the entire day.
The trail is well developed, although that does not mean completely flat. You are still walking through a tropical forest, with slopes, steps, humidity and sections where you need to watch your footing.
For most travelers, though, it feels more like a long forest walk than a demanding hike.
Mistico also has a useful advantage for early risers.
Entry currently begins at 6:00 a.m.
That works particularly well in La Fortuna. You can walk the bridges in the morning, have lunch, return to your accommodation for a while and still have plenty of room for something else later in the day.
That is usually a much nicer rhythm than trying to squeeze several major activities into a single day.
Choose Mistico if: the hanging bridges are the main attraction, you prefer a somewhat shorter route, or you want an early start that leaves the rest of the day open.
Sky Adventures: when you want a little more adventure
Sky Adventures shifts the experience slightly.
Its hanging-bridges trail is about 4 kilometers and includes uneven terrain and changes in elevation.
The difference between 3.2 and 4 kilometers may not sound significant, but distance is only part of the story.
Sky involves more ups and downs, and the walk can feel a little more adventurous.
Then there are the bridges themselves.
Some of Sky's bridges stretch up to 236 meters, or 774 feet, and stand as high as 70 meters, or 230 feet, above the terrain.
If being halfway across a long bridge with the rainforest far below is part of what excites you about this activity, that is a strong reason to consider Sky.
If heights make you uncomfortable, it may be a reason to think twice.
Sky's other big advantage is that hanging bridges do not have to be your only activity there.
The Arenal park also offers an aerial tram and ziplines, with packages that combine all three.
If ziplining is already on your La Fortuna list, doing everything at Sky can be much easier than visiting Mistico for the bridges and driving somewhere else for your next activity.
Choose Sky Adventures if: you want a slightly longer and more varied walk, the height of the bridges is part of the appeal, or you want to combine the bridges with the aerial tram and ziplines.
Is a guide worth it?
You do not need one to enjoy either park.
If you mainly want to walk through the forest, cross the bridges, take photos and stop whenever you like, going on your own can be a great experience.
If wildlife is high on your list, I would seriously consider a guide.
Rainforest animals are remarkably easy to miss.
You can walk within a few meters of a frog, snake or perfectly camouflaged bird and never realize it was there.
That is where a good guide can change the experience.
They know where to look, recognize sounds and have far more practice spotting animals hidden in the vegetation.
That still does not guarantee a sloth, monkey or toucan.
This is a forest, not a zoo.
But if wildlife is one of your main reasons for visiting the bridges, I would spend the extra money on a guide before paying to visit both parks.
Which one is better for wildlife?
I would not choose between Mistico and Sky Adventures based on a promise of seeing more animals.
Both are surrounded by rainforest, and both give you opportunities to see wildlife.
What you actually find depends on the time of day, weather, activity around the trail and a fair amount of luck.
Mistico does let you begin much earlier, but a 6:00 a.m. entrance does not guarantee better wildlife sightings.
If wildlife is a priority, choose the park that fits your day best and consider going with a guide.

What if you're afraid of heights?
In that case, think less about the length of the trail and more about how you feel on a suspension bridge.
Some people barely notice the height. Others are perfectly comfortable until they reach the middle, feel the bridge move slightly and look down.
Sky offers the stronger sense of height, which may be exactly what you want if that is part of the fun.
Mistico is not a ground-level experience either. Its highest bridge is about 45 meters, or 148 feet, above the forest floor.
If someone in your group has a real fear of heights, watch a few recent visitor videos before booking.
Seeing what the bridges actually feel like can tell you much more than reading their measurements.
One person's "not scary at all" may be another person's absolute limit.
What if someone has limited mobility?
Mistico is the first park I would contact.
Along with its main route and shorter walking option, Mistico currently offers a 250-meter accessible trail for visitors who need assisted mobility.
That does not mean every visitor can complete the full circuit or cross every bridge.
If someone uses a wheelchair, has difficulty walking longer distances or needs a particular form of assistance, contact Mistico before buying tickets and ask exactly which parts of the experience are available.
Sky, by comparison, has uneven terrain and elevation changes throughout the trail.
For any specific mobility concern, it is better to confirm directly with the park than to rely on another traveler's experience.
Which one is better with kids?
There is no automatic winner here either.
It depends on the child.
A kid who loves walking, exploring and feeling like they are on an adventure may have a great time at Sky, especially if the longer bridges and height sound exciting.
With younger children, or kids who get tired quickly, Mistico may be easier to fit because of the shorter main circuit and the option of an even shorter route.
There is another part of the experience that is easy to forget while planning from home.
Kids will probably love the bridges.
The bigger question is how much they will enjoy the stretches of trail between them.
If you already know someone will start asking "how much farther?" after an hour of walking, keep that in mind before choosing the longer route.
Can you visit without a car?
Yes.
Transportation options are available for both parks from the La Fortuna area for an additional cost.
What I would not do is assume that every hotel or vacation rental described as being "in La Fortuna" falls inside the same pickup zone.
The Arenal area is more spread out than it first appears on a map.
Two properties can both use La Fortuna or Arenal in their location and still be a meaningful drive apart.
If you are traveling without a car, confirm transportation before you book.
In that situation, logistics can matter much more than a small difference in admission price.
Should you visit both?
For most travelers, I would say no.
Mistico and Sky are different enough to make this comparison worthwhile, but similar enough that spending two separate mornings on hanging bridges is not necessarily the best use of a short stay in La Fortuna.
Choose the one that fits your trip best and use the other morning for something different.
Walk near the volcano, visit the waterfall, go rafting, look for birds or simply leave a few hours with nothing scheduled.
La Fortuna is much more enjoyable when the itinerary has room to breathe.
What if it rains?
Do not worry too much about ordinary rain.
You are visiting a rainforest in Costa Rica.
A light rain jacket or poncho belongs in your bag even if the morning starts clear.
And do not write off the entire outing just because your weather app shows rain. In La Fortuna, a downpour can pass and leave clearer skies behind, or one part of the area can be wet while another is only cloudy.
If conditions become severe, always follow the park's instructions.

Some mornings the volcano is visible from the moment you wake up.
Other days it spends hours behind the clouds.
That is simply part of being here.
What to bring
Keep it simple:
- Comfortable, closed walking shoes
- A light rain jacket or poncho
- Water
- Insect repellent
- Sunscreen
- Binoculars if wildlife or birds matter to you
- A camera or phone
- Light clothing that dries relatively quickly
I would also avoid carrying a heavy bag.
A few kilometers through La Fortuna's heat and humidity are much more enjoyable when you are only carrying what you need.
So, Mistico or Sky Adventures?
Start with the kind of day you want.
Choose Mistico if you picture a relaxed morning walking through the rainforest, crossing bridges at your own pace and finishing with enough time to rest or do something else later.
Choose Sky Adventures if you want a little more adventure, the height of the bridges is part of the appeal, or you want to combine the walk with the aerial tram and ziplines.
If wildlife matters most, either park can work; consider adding a guide.
And if you want another activity later that day, hanging bridges pair very naturally with the hot springs.
Walk in the morning, have a relaxed lunch, return to your accommodation for a break and head back out toward the end of the afternoon.
